Visiting donut heaven

In pursuit of a story, sometimes you follow your nose. Other times you follow your stomach.

In Friday's Lowell Sun, I wrote a column proclaiming the Donut Shack in Lowell as having the best donuts on the planet. Hey, it's my opinion.

The Donut Shack has been satisfying donut lovers since owner Eric Fonseca and his brother-in-law opened the doors to their tiny space on Westford Street in 1982. For nearly 40 years, the Donut Shack has satisfied the cravings of thousands.

There's no drive-through. There's no parking lot. Find a spot on Westford Street or park on one of the side streets. There's no fancy lobby. Prior to COVID-19 days, there was barely space for five patrons. Fonseca no longer offers muffins. There's certainly a chain that sells a lot more coffee than Fonseca does.

But his donuts cannot be beat, especially the honey dipped ones, my favorite. If you've been to the Donut Shack, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, treat yourself. You won't be disappointed.
