Boston is one of the most competitive sports talk radio markets in the country.
WEEI (FM 93.7) used to rule the local airways. Now The Sports Hub (FM 98.5) is king. But which show is the best?
Given the ratings, most people in greater Boston would likely pick Felger & Mazz. Good show, but not No. 1.
That distinction belongs to Gasper & Murray on The Sports Hub. It's a shame they're only on once a week and never for more than three hours. Sometimes more is less. Gasper & Murray pairs Chris Gasper of WCVB NewsCenter 5 and Jim Murray of the Felger & Mazz program.
They are a perfect combination. Murray is fantastically funny. Sports radio doesn't have to be deadly serious, as many hosts apparently think. It's OK to laugh. It's sports, not life and death. Murray is that crazy uncle who makes every Christmas better. Gasper is the information guy. A former columnist at the Boston Globe, Gasper is well versed in a variety of topics.
He seems to remain a newspaperman at heart and has the inside knowledge many shows lack.
Normally, the Gasper & Murray show begins Saturday at 11 a.m. Most times it runs until 1 p.m. It's always a must-listen for this sports fan. Unfortunately, I just turned the Sports Hub on and Matt McCarthy is filling in for both Gasper & Murray. Click. I'll tune in next week.
