River Hawks soaring

Wow, what a stretch it's been for the UMass Lowell athletic department.

On Sunday, the UML men's and women's basketball teams both won to advance to the America East Conference semifinals.

The men defeated New Hampshire, 72-64, on UNH's home floor, behind a game-high 28 points from Obadiah Noel. It's the first time the men have reached the AE semis. The River Hawks will play Saturday, March 6 at No. 1 seed UMBC. After its win over New Hampshire, UML received some national airtime on CBS.

The women defeated NJIT, 72-52, in Lowell. The River Hawks will play in the semifinals for the second straight season. They will play at Stony Brook on Sunday, March 7.

There's only one America East school to make the semis in both basketball tournaments - UMass Lowell.

In hockey, the River Hawks have won three of four and are coming off a weekend road sweep of Vermont.

Also, graduate student Kaley Richards, a Lowell native, recently ran the eighth-fastest mile time in the nation.
