With temperatures beginning to rise, and COVID-19 restrictions loosening, one of the most popular recreation spots in greater Lowell is the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail.
On a sunny spring day, the 6.8-mile portion of it from Lowell to Westford hosts scores of walkers, runners and cyclists. But people are going to have to be a bit patient for the next month or so in the 5.2-mile stretch through Chelmsford.
The Chelmsford Department of Public Works, thanks to a grant from MassTrails, is fixing portion of the path which had root incursions. The DPW is asking people to stay off the trail so as to not impede work. Fences and other barriers have been erected at several road crossings. Only the part of the trail in Chelmsford is being worked on.
If all goes well, the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail should reopen in mid-to-late April. Trail sections will open sequentially once they've been regraded and repaved.
Phase 1 of the trail, the stretch from Lowell to Westford, opened in 2009. Phase 2A, a 4.9-mile which spans Westford, Carlisle and Acton, opened in 2018. Ultimately, the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail will go from Lowell to Framingham once Concord, Sudbury and Framingham are linked.
