Say it ain't so.
The lint on Bill Belichick's belly button knows more football than I do, but I honestly can't believe the Patriots are going to re-sign Cam Newton to a one-year contract. I almost choked on my Corn Flakes when I read the news.
At this stage of his career, Newton is a lot of positive things. Great teammate. Hard worker. A guy with an engaging personality. Someone who gives out funny nicknames. A tough competitor.
But this is what he's not: Someone who can throw a football.
Yes, the Patriots didn't have many offensive weapons last season. But it was painful to watch Newton try to throw the ball 20 yards down field. Despite being the size of a refrigerator, Newton had to put every ounce of energy into every throw. And he was incredibly inaccurate, often missing targets by 10 to 15 yards. He finished the season with eight throwing touchdowns. Eight!
When the Patriots last season took a penalty, even a five-yard one, you knew right then they were about to punt. A 10-yard penalty? Belichick might as well just trotted out punter Jake Bailey on second down. Newton can talk a mean game. But he can't throw a football.
This is a terrible move.
