John Galvin knows a thing or two about charity golf tournaments.
So the Lowell resident, who played four seasons in the National Football League, felt pretty good when his foursome completed its round Monday at the Friends of Reading Football and Mike Boyd Golf Classic at Butter Brook Golf Club in Westford.
Galvin's team finished at 14-under par. That's good enough to win many scramble format tournaments. And Galvin, a former Boston College linebacker who later played for the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings, felt pretty good about his contributions to his team.
Then his group arrived back at the clubhouse. Wanting to see how they stacked up against the competition, Galvin did a double take when he looked at the results. One team finished at 18-under.
I've played in many charity tournaments as well. The first thing that goes through your mind is one thing: Those guys cheated. 18-under! No way in hell. Galvin admits thinking the same thing.
Until someone at the club mentioned who one of the golfers on the winning team was.
Recent NBA champion Pat Connaughton, a shooting guard for the Milwaukee Bucks and one of the greatest all-around athletes Massachusetts has produced. An Arlington native, Connaughton first began turning heads at St. John's Prep.
He could throw a baseball more than 90 miles per hour. He could hold his own against the top basketball players in the country. Connaughton went on star in basketball and baseball at Notre Dame.
He was a fourth-round pick in the MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles and a second-round pick in the NBA Draft. He opted for a basketball career and it paid off when the Bucks topped the Phoenix Suns for the NBA title.
Anyway, once Galvin heard Connaughton was on the 18-under team, he laughed. Later, he talked to Connaughton and found him to be humble and down to earth. Turns out Connaughton isn't bad at golf either.
