More practice, less commercials

Got no beef with the guy. By many accounts, Rickie Fowler is one of the most popular players on the PGA Tour.

But it's amazing how high his profile is - due to all the commercials he does - compared to his achievements.

The 32-year-old recently told Golf Digest he spends 25-30 days a year shooting commercials. He's been in commercials for Farmers Insurance, Rocket Mortgage and Grant Thornton, to name a few. He also pitches Cobra/Puma, Mercedes and TaylorMade.

The ultimate pitchman isn't so great pitching a golf ball anymore. For all his commercial air time, he's only won five PGA Tour events, none since he won the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

He didn't receive any air time at the Masters earlier this month - that's because he didn't qualify to play. He's won only two PGA Tour events since 2015. Once the world's No. 1 ranked amateur when he was dominating at Oklahoma State, Fowler is struggling to make cuts these days.

Consider the last four major championships. 2020: Masters (tied for 29th); PGA Championship (missed cut); U.S. Open (tied for 49th). 2021: Masters (didn't qualify). Fowler was a great player in 2014, the year he tied for second at the U.S. Open and British Open. That was seven years ago.

Maybe Fowler should spend less time shooting commercials and more time on his golf game.
