A Merrimack Valley landmark is closing in on a milestone.
On Sept. 21, 1922, a dedication was held to officially open the Lowell Memorial Auditorium. Next year will mark the building's 100th birthday and the Lowell Management Group which runs the facility is planning to mark the milestone with a bang. I have written a story on LMA's vast history for the Lowell Sun and it's scheduled to run this Sunday.
The Lowell Memorial Auditorium has hosted a dizzying array of events since opening its doors. The building, which cost approximately $1 million to construct, sits adjacent to the Concord River (and a stone's throw from the Merrimack River) on East Merrimack Street in Lowell.
I've seen Bruce Springsteen perform solo there. I've seen Robin Williams tell jokes there. I've seen William Shatner talk about his life there. I've also seen a high school graduation, multiple police academy graduations, pro wrestling shows and Golden Gloves fights at the LMA.
On Sept. 21, 2021, the landmark will celebrate its 100th birthday. Let's hope life is back to normal again by them and that the building will receive its proper due. (The picture below, courtesy of Jim O'Donnell, is from a 1926 postcard of the building.)
