How Swede it is

Adding players from Sweden has proven to be a home run (how's that for switching sports?) for the UMass Lowell hockey program.

Christian Folin embarked on a 244-game NHL career with the Wild, Kings, Flyers and Canadiens after starring at UML from 2012-14. Another top defenseman for the River Hawks in recent years, Mattias Goransson, also hails from Sweden. Both are now playing professionally in their native country.

Two current River Hawks are among the team's top players. Sophomore forward Carl Berglund leads UML with a 3-7-10 line. Sophomore forward Andre Lee is tied for second in scoring with a 4-3-7 line. Berglund and Lee have scored 33 and 27 points, respectively, in their college careers to date.

And it appears UML has struck gold with yet another Swedish player. Defenseman Isac Jonsson, who is committed to UML, is in his first season playing in North America. He's made a smooth transition. The 178-pound Jonsson scored his first goal Friday for Tri-City of the United States Hockey League. He added two assists Saturday.

In 22 games, he has a goal and 11 assists. He has 10 points over his last 12 games in the USHL, the top junior league in the U.S. Jonsson is considered an excellent skater.
