Steve Renko pitched for the Red Sox in 1979 and 1980. He went 20-18 with a 4.15 earned run average over the two seasons.
I'm sure he never entered my mind after his last Red Sox start in 1980, more than 40 years ago. Now I can't get the 6-foot-5, 230-pound pitcher out of my head.
I recently decided to sell my card collection, or at least some of it. I have thousands of baseball, football and hockey cards, most from the 1970s and 1980s. A few basketball ones, too.
One set of cards jumped out at me: The 1980 Topps baseball set. I must have been bored that summer because I have approximately 2,000 cards just from that year alone. I started going through them.
One card kept popping up. Over and over.
Steve Renko. Steve Renko. Steve Renko. Steve Renko. Steve Renko. Steve Renko. Steve Renko. Steve Renko. Steve Renko.
That's right. I have nine Steve Renko cards from 1980.
He pitched for seven MLB teams during a career which spanned from 1969-83. In his career, he won 134 games and lost 146.
Now he's haunting my thoughts. Everywhere I turn, he's there. When I'm running. When I'm eating. When I'm doing yardwork.
A very good/excellent condition Steve Renko card from 1980 goes for $4. A mint 9 card lists for $10. Hmmmm. If I trade all nine of the cards and get back $36, would that pay for a two-minute visit to someone who can erase the image of nine Steve Renko cards from my brain?
