Green Meadow Golf Club is still open. That's the good news.
The bad news? The 36-hole layout in Hudson, N.H., the place where thousands of golfers have learned the game since it opened in 1960, may not be open much longer.
On Friday, taking advantage of sunny skies and 60-degree weather, I played 13 holes with my brother, Tommy, nephew Ryan and nephew Danny. As I paid for my round, a woman behind the counter said the course is now open on a "week to week" basis.
Last May, it was revealed that the course was under agreement to be sold to a Dallas-based company, Hillwood Investment Properties. A neighborhood group has fought the proposed sale with fervor. I'm not sure of the status of the sale. I was surprised Green Meadow was even open; I thought the sale was a done deal.
If Friday is the last time I play Green Meadow, we went out on a good note. Green Meadow has a special place in my heart. It's the place my father first brought my brother and I to play a real round. We first hit golf balls at Tyngsboro Country Club, but it wasn't an official round. Sadly, Tyngsboro CC is no longer. Now, with Green Meadow apparently close to closing, that means 45 holes of public golf within seven miles of one another will be gone.
Want to play Green Meadow one more time? It sounds like you better book a tee time soon.
