Dog-gone great friends

They are the most loyal animals on the planet.

Dogs ask for little; they give so much. Yesterday was National Puppy Day. I loved seeing the pictures of all the puppies people shared on social media.

I've been extremely fortunate to have had three phenomenal dogs. My childhood dog, Heidi, was a sheep dog. Smart as a whip, she would often cross a busy set of railroad tracks and then a dangerous street to arrive at our family's business. We got Heidi when I was a kid and she left us when I was in college, an amazing 15-year run.

I received Bowser, a Labrador springer who looked like a Dalmatian, for free after seeing an ad in a New Hampshire newspaper. Wow, did we get lucky. Bowser was everyone's best friend. He loved to go for runs and would get so excited to have company his tail should have been registered as a weapon. Bowser made it to 14.

Our last dog was Will, a British Labrador retriever. We bought him from a breeder when he was one and a half. He was 13 when we had to put him to sleep on Nov. 5, 2019. That day still haunts me. I love dogs with all my heart, but I've resisted the urge to get another in the past 16 months. Will was special. When he left us, it left a huge hole in our family's hearts. When is it the right time to get a new dog? Not sure.

But National Puppy Day brought a smile to my face.

Will "leaving" the yard work for me while he supervised.
