College knowledge

They are the unsung heroes of college athletic departments. They work long hours and never receive any headlines.

That's because those in Sports Information/Athletic Communications offices are too busy making sure their athletes are the ones grabbing the spotlight.

UMass Lowell is blessed to have a terrific Athletic Communications office. Ashley Robbins, Aaron King, Jordyn Rochon and Samantha Pineau are tireless advocates for the university's athletes.

One of my favorite people in the Sports Information field is Jim Seavey, who served as UML's Director of Athletic Media Relations from October 1995 to June 1998. Seavey, a legend in the business, has officially retired after a phenomenal 33-year run which began in October 1995 when he took a job at Nichols College.

His last stop was at UMass Dartmouth. In between he energetically fought for athletes to be recognized at, in order, Merrimack, UMass Lowell, Stonehill, Suffolk, Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Mount Ida.

That's eight colleges, folks. That's thousands of athletes Jim advocated to media members throughout New England and beyond. How many hours did he work? How many athletes did he champion? How many games did he attend?

It's mind-boggling to think about. A tip of the cap to all my friends in what can be a grueling business. And, thanks, Jim. Enjoy your enjoyment. You earned it.
