Book it, Krueger's a master

Looking for an author to try?

May I introduce you to William Kent Krueger, a criminally underrated author best known for his 18 books about Cork O'Connor, a former sheriff. The books, generally set in the north woods of Minnesota, are wonderfully written. I've been a big fan for years.

When he strayed from O'Connor and wrote a standalone novel in 2013, I was disappointed. I was hoping he produced another O'Connor story. But "Ordinary Grace" was terrific and showed another, deeper side of Krueger.

And then he hit an absolute home run in 2019 with the release of "This Tender Land." The novel, an adventure story about orphans on a river odyssey, was my favorite book of 2019. Think an updated Huckleberry Finn adventure. If you've been introduced to Krueger, you're among the lucky.

If you haven't, do yourself a favor. Get your hands on one of his books. You won't be sorry.
