A $16,000 tip

Most things don't bother me. A couple really do.

I can't stand it when people rubberneck after a fender bender along a highway. If a car is on fire and you can pull someone to safety, do it. Otherwise, mind your own business and stop driving 20 miles per hour.

I also can't stand people who don't tip generously when they dine out. Cooks work hard. Waitresses work hard. Bartenders work hard. Food runners work hard. Nowadays, especially due to the pandemic, people who work at restaurants and other eateries need to be supported.

So kudos to the guy who walked into The Stumble Inn Bar & Grill in Londonderry, N.H., on June 12.

After ordering two chili dogs, pickle chips, a coke, a beer and a tequila - his order came to $37.93 - the man stunned workers when he left a gigantic tip.

How big of a tip? Try $16,000. Yes, that's right, it was for $16,000 on a Visa debit card. Talk about a generous tipper! My daughter Lyndsay has worked on and off as a waitress to supplement her income from being a high school English teacher. Some of her stories about customers are horrifying.

Many people who used to tip 15 percent are now giving 20 percent. They realize that about one-third of restaurants in Massachusetts didn't survive the pandemic. And the ones that have made it aren't exactly rolling in the dough right now.

So support your wait staff and cooks. You don't have to leave a $16,000 tip like one charitable man did in Londonderry, N.H. But be grateful, and thankful, as the world starts to return to normal.
